This page is about the Coven as a group. For its individual members, see:

Joy Johnson-Johjima
Faith Fernández

Hope Halko

The Coven are a group of three witches at Spooky High School. They are minor NPCs in Monster Prom, and Joy (by herself) is one of the love interests in the sequel game, Monster Camp. Hope is voiced by Christine Marie Cabanos (@ChristineMCVA), Joy is voiced by Cristina Vee (@CristinaVee), and Faith is voiced by Danielle McRae (@DanielleMcVO).

They are almost never seen separate from each other, and are rarely referred to by their real names, mostly being referred to as a unit. The three of them, albeit for the most part off-screen, work together to defeat the "Big Bad" and save the world.

Appearances[]

Hope is a petite girl with red eyes. Her dark purple hair is cut into a bob with bangs in the front.

Joy has a larger figure than most of the other females in the game. This is acknowledged on the Coven's route, with Hope mentioning that if Joy dies, there will be no body type diversity at the school. Her eyes are green and her hair is dark purple. The side has a zig-zag shaven into it. She wears dark lipstick and eyeshadow, and has a beauty mark under her left eye.

Faith is a tall girl. She has long white hair tied into a ponytail, and darker skin than the other members. Her eyes are hidden by dark glasses, and as she is looking down at her phone, her eye color is never revealed. Assuming she follows the pattern of having her favorite color be her nail and eye color, she has blue eyes.

Outfits[]

Hope wears a long sleeved dress with a white collar and white belt. She has black stockings and flats on. She wears a red collar with golden accents around her neck.

Joy wears a dark colored romper and dark stockings. She wears dark purple combat boots, and has several gold bracelets on. She wears see through cover-up on top, with the train extending to her feet.

Faith wears a dress similar to Hope's, but it has a white bow near the neck area. She has white stockings on, unlike the other girls. She wears dark high heels and dark glasses with a blue frame. She has triangle earrings.

Personalities[]

They serve as the typical nerds in a high school setting. They are oftentimes insulted and joked about by the other characters because of this, most notably by Vera.

The Coven is fixated on defeating an evil force called the Big Bad, which they are convinced will bring the end of the world if not dealt with. Along the way, they work together to defeat lesser evils. They often need certain artifacts to do this, and this leads to them often demanding items from the player character or other NPCs, such as the blood of an angel.

They see their fights as a television show, often referring to the Big Bad of the "season", or mention events that occurred in previous (and unknown to the player) "episodes". There are also several references to their audience and ratings as well.

The witches are all on good terms with each other, and support each other. For instance, in Joy's secret ending, Hope and Faith support Joy when the player takes her to prom, saying that she deserves a break and they can deal with the antagonist this time. Additionally, an option during the last event of this ending is to make a montage of the good times the Coven has had, which includes them studying and fighting together.

A lunchtime event reveals that Hope and Faith don't like when Joy claims to be the leader, implying that they see themselves as equal to her. However, Joy seems to be the one that takes the most action among the three, and even stands in the middle. Additionally, when recounting their backstory, Faith explains that Joy became their leader after their original leader, Grace, died at the end of Season 1.[1]

Joy[]

Joy is a noted bookworm who enjoys reading.[2] She did not want to join the Coven at first.[1]

Faith[3][]

Faith is the level-headed member of the Coven. She considers herself a pacifist and prefers to only resort to violence as a last resort, as she sees no reason to escalate an encounter if de-escalation is possible. She is cautious, patient, a pragmatic, but likes silliness. She works at a community center and volunteers at a cat shelter, as she has a great fondness for cats. She is not good at small talk.

She has occasional casual sex with Polly; she believes Polly to be very good at it, and she considers sexual prowess her "main criteria" when picking casual partners.

She rarely uses magic, as she believes relying on it too much can be risky and considers it to be a powerful drug.

When her Evil counterpart appears, she comments that patience is a trait she (and her counterpart) share.

Hope[1][]

First Hope[]

TBA

Second Hope/Evil Hope[]

TBA

Third Hope[]

Fourth Hope[]

Although seen as small and cute, Hope can be very mean and sassy at times; this stems from her second incarnation, the Hope that originally came from the evil dimension. She is bold, resolved, and unapologetically herself.

Relationships[]

Trivia[]

  • The Coven is heavily based on the television series Charmed, which focuses on a trio of sister witches. Their group consisting of three and frequent references to being on a popular and long-running television show of their own reflects this.
    • Liam and Dmitri's relationship with the Coven as both enemies and allies, and the Coven's frequent insistence of having or recruiting a "supernatural ally" is a reference to the Charmed witches always having a supernatural entity as an ally of their own (most notably, an "angel" and a demon).
      • Liam's evil alias "Angelus" functions as both a reference to this and Liam/Angelus/Angel of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
    • Damien's crush on Hope may be a reference to the character Cole, a demon who was in love with one of the Charmed sisters.
  • A hidden route is available to date Joy.
  • Although not confirmed, it is possible that Faith's eyes are blue, as Hope and Joy's eye colors match their nail polish and accessories.
  • Polly sees Faith as her evil twin, with the other two being the evil counterparts for Miranda and Vera.
    • Humorously, Hope describes Miranda as a "discount version of [her]" in her route, while Faith's route sees Faith fighting an actual evil version of herself.
  • When given the opportunity to have a genie grant their wish:
    • Hope wants a secret hideout for the group with a mini-fridge and Foosball table
    • Faith wants world peace
    • Joy suggests getting a weapon to slay the Big Bad of the season
  • According to Univertica Junior, Faith's favorite color is green, Joy's favorite color is purple and Hope's favorite color is blue.
    • Joy's favorite color is the only one that does not represent another member of the Coven.
      • As it is the color of Liam's skin, this likely references her romantic feelings for him.
  • In the game's official Discord server, Mihail confirmed that Grace was considered as one of their names until the very end, but it was dropped because, in his own words,
    • "...like having Joy, Hope and Faith are good things to have, and they have a similar meaning, like stuff you can hold to for a good grateful life. Grace it is more tied to something someone has not by own volition."
    • This is acknowledged in Hope's route: in the first Season, the Coven was comprised of Faith, Hope, and their leader Grace. When Grace died at the end of the season, Joy joined the group and replaced her as leader.
  • The Coven is "bound by some timeless rules", such as always needing to be a group of three, as three is the number of the Goddess.
  • The individual Coven members have three voicelines that reference spells and incantations of popular culture:
    • "Azarath Metrion Zinthos" is an incantation regularly used by the DC Comics character Raven, of Teen Titans fame.
    • "Bibbidi Boddibi Boo" is a spell used by the Fairy Godmother in Disney's animated adaptation of Cinderella.
      • Hope mispronounces the first word as "Bidibi".
      • Faith lacks this voiceline. Whether Danielle McRae was never recorded saying it, or it was mistakenly not included in the mod tool, is unknown.
    • "Treguna Mekoides Trecorum Satis Dee" are magic words used in the Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks, included in the song "Subtitutiary Locomotion."
  • Joy's full name is Joy Johnson-Johjima.[6]
    • As Johjima is a Japanese name, this means that Joy is at least half-Japanese or has a Japanese parent.
    • Her surname was originally announced as Johnson-Junpei in the Monster Camp love interest trailer, but was later changed.[7]
      • This change was due to the fact that Junpei is not a real Japanese surname. Mihail confirmed in the offical Discord server that "it was a mistake and we thought it was a bit culturally insensitive."
    • Her full name may be a reference to the popular anime JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, where each of the various protagonists' names can be shorted to some form of 'JoJo'.
      • In the credits of Monster Camp, a star mark on Joy's back can be seen. This mark is similar to a birthmark main characters of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure have, further reinforcing this reference.
  • One of Joy's voice lines is "You're such a Zeppo". This is a reference to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "The Zeppo", itself referencing Zeppo Marx, considered the "extraneous" Marx Brother compared to Chico, Groucho, and Harpo[8]. It has come to refer to a member of a group that is either used, ignored, left-out, or stepped-on frequently.[9]
  • Joy is vegan.[2]
  • The ship names for Joy with either Liam or Dmitri are "Jiam" and "Jmitri", respectively.[10]
  • Each of Joy's three evil exes share their primary color with a member of the Coven:
    • Axarax and Joy herself are both green.
    • Salomé and Faith are both blue.
    • Gerard and Hope are both red.
  • Faith's full name is Faith Fernández.[11][3]
    • This means Faith is Hispanic.
  • As a nod to her evil counterpart, Faith is a Gemini.[12]
  • Hope's backstory bears resemblance to the popular magical girl anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, in which the deuteragonist Homura Akemi repeatedly travels back in time to prevent the titular Madoka Kaname from becoming a magical girl (and eventually, a witch) or dying.
    • It also bears similarities to the backstory of Kazumi Subaru/Michiru Kazusa, the protagonist of the spin-off manga Puella Magi Kazumi Magica, who became a witch and was repeatedly cloned by her friends in an attempt to bring her back, but whose incarnations always eventually went berserk and had to be replaced.
      • In Monster Camp, Joy explains the background behind the PRANK MASTERZ ending: she repeatedly went back in time to try (and fail) to prevent Scott and Polly from releasing Z'Gord, all while watching Liam find love with every other character but her, until she finally managed to seal Z'Gord into a totem that the Player then took to prom and helped transition into Zoe in the DEITY ending.
    • Coincidentally, Joy and Hope share the English voice actresses of Homura and Madoka, respectively.
      • Further, Polly shares her voice actress with another central character of the series, Sayaka Miki, who shares blue with Faith as her primary color. Polly is considered Faith's counterpart.
      • Joy's favorite color is also purple, Homura's primary color.
    • As another potential connection, her surname Halko is the same as a variant of the Turkish word halka, meaning "circle" or "ring"[13]. This meaning is shared with Madoka's first name and the surname of Iroha Tamaki, protagonist of the spin-off series Magia Record. In both instances, this meaning is used to refer to repeating cycles of events both within the magical girl system and of time itself. Here, it would also refer to Hope's repeated deaths and resurrections.
      • Halko is also a Finnish surname that means "firewood"[14] or "split log"[15], which may also refer to the fact that Hope was split into multiple incarnations of herself.
